Where to Go
Danube River
The Danube River is the second-longest in Europe after the Volga. It rises in the Black Forest mountains of western Germany and flows for some 1,770 miles (2,850 km) to its mouth on the Black Sea. Along its course, it passes through 10 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. The best time to travel the Danube River is between May and September as the climate is perfect. There are probably few Bavarian cities as gorgeous as Passau. Old World Charm shines on your visit to Regensburg, one of the oldest medieval cities in Germany. Find picturesque cobblestone streets and alleys, colorful buildings and cafés, a vibrant Old Town that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rhine River
No other river in the world has so many old and famous cities on its banks—Basel, Switzerland; Strasbourg, France; and Worms, Mainz, and Cologne, Germany, to name a few. Kölsch beer is the distinct local beer of Cologne, a major cultural metropolis over 2,000 years old – equally known for its imposing majestic Cathedral and romantic Hohenzollern Bridge, weighed down by thousands of love locks. Visit the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and then take in the Rijksmuseum, which is Amsterdam's most popular museum. Find such paintings as Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and The Sampling Officials of the Amsterdam Drapers’ Guild, known as The Syndics; Vermeer’s The Milkmaid; Frans Hal’s A Militiaman Holding a Berkemeyer, known as The Merry Drinker; and even a few works by Vincent van Gogh, including a self-portrait of the artist. The Vincent Van Gogh museum houses the world's largest collection of his works such as Sunflowers and many self-portraits.
Douro River
The Douro River third longest river of the Iberian Peninsula running through Spain and Portugal. Since the 1930s the Douro has been harnessed extensively for hydroelectric power and irrigation. The most populous cities along the Douro River are Valladolid and Zamora in Spain, and Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. The latter two are located at the mouth of the Douro at the Atlantic Ocean. In Portugal, the Douro flows through the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Viseu, Vila Real, Aveiro, and Porto, which is one of the wine capitals of the world. Porto is the only exporter of Port wines, which are produced exclusively in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. Port is a sweet wine often served with dessert or paired with cheese.
Moselle River
The Moselle is a river that rises in the Vosges mountains and flows through north-eastern France, Luxembourg, and western Germany. It is a left-bank tributary of the Rhine, which it joins at Koblenz. A small part of Belgium is in its basin as it includes the Sauer and the Our. Its lower course "twists and turns its way between Trier and Koblenz along one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys." In this section the land to the north is the Eifel which stretches into Belgium; to the south lies the Hunsrück. The river flows through a region that was first cultivated by the Romans. Today, its hillsides are covered by terraced vineyards where "some of the best Rieslings grow". Many castle ruins sit on the hilltops above wine villages and towns along the slopes. Traben-Trarbach with its art nouveau architecture and Bernkastel-Kues with its traditional market square are two of the many tourist attractions on the Moselle river. Imagine sipping wine while viewing some of the oldest castles in the area.
